How the day runs
A day chasing tuna
Step 1
Pre-dawn meet
Meet at Seaforth Marina in Mission Bay, load gear, safety briefing and coffee before lines off.
Step 2
Run offshore
Head out past the kelp toward the current break or the day's bite — commonly 20 to 60+ miles depending on reports.
Step 3
Fishing the zone
Work paddies, meter marks and breaking fish with flylined baits, jigs and troll gear as conditions dictate.
Step 4
Run home & fillet
Head back to Mission Bay, clean and bag your catch at the dock, photos and gear off.

Private bluefin tuna charters out of San Diego
San Diego is the only place on the West Coast where bluefin tuna are within reach of a single-day private charter almost year round. From Seaforth Marina in Mission Bay we can be on the 43, the 302, the Corner or the upper 9 within a couple of hours of leaving the dock, and Captain Pablo runs to the current bite he has been watching that week rather than a fixed spot on a map.
Because this is a private six-pack charter and not a party boat, four anglers get the whole rail. That means kite fishing, flat-fall jigs, sinker rigs and fly-lined sardines all working at once, no tangles with strangers, and the freedom to stay on a school as long as it stays under the boat. Summer and fall bring the biggest bluefin and the yellowfin and dorado that ride the warm water with them; winter and spring runs still find quality fish on the offshore banks.
Trips leave from Mission Bay and are popular with San Diego locals from Pacific Beach, Point Loma, La Jolla and Ocean Beach, along with visitors staying downtown or in Mission Valley. Parking at the dock is free and the ramp is a straight shot from I-5 and SR-163.
